Behind every high school stands students who practice endlessly day and night to prove their schools worth and their own. On May 10 these students were honored for their commitment to both sports and academics. The Tespy Awards honor every player regardless of their sport whether it is indoors or outdoors, slow or fast paced.
This year’s hosts of the annual Tespy Awards were J.P Taravella High School English teacher Tim Deleeuw and History teacher Jennifer Letizia. For many years the hosts of the Tespy Awards has always been Deleeuw. However, this will be his last year hosting and teaching at Taravella.
“Tonight was very somber. I had a lot fun tonight, and I have had a lot in all the events, and I am looking forward to doing it at South Plantation,” Deleeuw said.
Throughout the night the coaches of each team awarded selected players with individual awards. The coaches gave out awards for Most Valuable Player, Most Improved, Scholar Athlete. After the players were awarded it was time for three distinct teams to be awarded: the boys’ bowling team for Male Sports Team of the Year, the girls’ lacrosse team for Female Sports Team of the Year, and the boys’ baseball team won Sports Team of the Year.
“It felt really great winning MVP for tennis. I am really thankful for my coach Chowayou and all the hard work he has put in for us,” Junior Amber Brocki said.
In between awards JPTV played videos of athletes talking about how they value their teammates and gave impersonations of their coaches. By the end of the night every team from fall to spring were honored at the Tespy Awards.
