Taravella students took part in the annual Broward County Literary Fair that takes place every March. Fifty student writers entered in 12 specific categories and one winner was chosen for best in each category. A panel of student judges tackled the first round of submissions. The promising ones were looked at by Literary Fair Advisor Carla Mroz. Mroz judged the remaining submissions along with a panel of Taravella English teachers, including Jennipher Price, Christa Martel and Lara Musial. Winners were chosen during the last week of March.
English Teacher Lara Musial has been a judge in the fair for five years.
“I like seeing the creativity in the students,” Musial said. “It’s exciting to me as a language arts teacher to see students writing in so many different ways with passion. I hate choosing just one because there are so many good ones. It’s very difficult to narrow it down to just one.”
Most of the contestants were a part of the Creative Writing class. Junior Alexandra Giang, who entered in the personal narrative category did not expect to win. Her piece, “Silver Lining”, spoke of her troubles battling with cancer as a child. Giang views writing as one of her hobbies.
“I enjoyed being able to put my story out there. It’s about all the things I went through and everything I realized because of it; which is that love is the most important thing. Writing is truly powerful.”
Senior Dinniah Bartholomew used her inner rage to write the winning haiku, “Anger”.
“It feels great to have my work liked,” Bartholomew said.
This year’s winners go on to compete in the District Literary Fair, which encompasses other schools as well. District Literary Fair winners will be announced soon.
